After leaving ADD Inc., he joined a Cambridge-based residential architecture firm that focused on sustainable design. Seeing an opportunity to realize his design concepts in the built environment and with a collection of interesting projects in need of the right builder, he formed a design-build partnership with his employer and started building the projects they had been drawing. Since 2002, he has owned and operated design-build firms in Boston and Philadelphia, which specialize in residential architecture and construction, always with am emphasis on sustainable design and materials. In 2019, he became a Certified Passive House Consultant and has since used Passive House principals to guide the firm's approach to construction and building science. After completing his undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Economics at Tufts University, he went on to complete his master's in architecture at Boston Architectural College, a program unique in its requirement of a full time practicum in addition to standard course work. Alan first discovered his love for building as a young child, pounding nails at his father’s workbench and contributing to the ongoing renovation project that was his family’s home. There he honed his attention to detail and stumble`d into a passion for building homes. After several summers there, he left to attend Tyler School of Art at Temple University to pursue his BFA in Sculpture; where he realized that his love of art and his love of building homes were one-in-the-same. Upon graduating Tyler, Adam worked in museums as an art handler, further contributing to his sharp focus. And as the lead Operations Director at a mid-sized commercial and residential real estate company; where he was responsible for multiple construction projects for over 500 units simultaneously. From 2008 to 2019 Adam owned his own business focused on residential construction. Working on all aspects of new construction and renovations; including project estimating and budgeting, code compliance, and final build. His skills also include: complete kitchen & bath renovations, Finish carpentry, historical preservation, window & door installation, as well as plumbing & electrical installation and maintenance. He spent his first three years in the industry learning the trade in the harsh mountain environment of Crested Butte, Colorado. His work involved high-end new construction focused on framing and trim. He has also spent time working in cabinet and casework fabrication shops. After Colorado he moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas and began work for a trim carpentry crew and later for a design build firm. screen porch was converted into a 4 season living space with a priority on light and connection with the adjacent trees and greenery. Close attention was paid to site lines from the street to maintain privacy but achieve a maximum sense of openness. The space included the primary house entrance so a combination of knee walls, changes in materials and lighting , as well as a tray ceiling were used to distinguish circulation areas from living areas. The house was carved up into multiple rooms with a small kitchen isolated at the back of the first floor. An exposed steel beam and columns were used to support a floor of masonry above and open up the entire first floor to the light and garden space created at the back yard. A folding back wall of glazing opens onto a Pennsylvania bluestone patio. A solar array was installed on the roof in such a way that passing shadows would not result in the shut-off of the entire array. A domestic solar hot water system was placed on a pitched section of roof that was not well suited to solar panels. And a white roof coating extends the life of the existing roof and reduces solar gain. At ground level impervious paving was replaced with sod and planting beds in an effort to retain rain water and create a cooler more livable open space for the owners. Rainwater collectors are fed from roof run-off and the water collected is used to water herb beds and a living wall of succulent plants. In addition to the owners’ commitment to preserve as much of the original interior detail as possible by hiring local craftsmen to recreate and match plaster features, salvaging and relocating old wooden flooring and reviving features such as the refinished claw foot tub, care and time was taken to source materials locally and choose materials with a small environmental footprint. Some of these materials included cork floors, locally fabricated concrete countertops and kitchen cabinets, and shower shelves and a kitchen nook made from teak salvaged from a local bank. Pine flooring was reclaimed from new tiled bathroom areas to be reused as infill at each landing where a stair was removed. A marble sink and backsplash were relocated from one of the bedrooms and reused in a custom built alcove in the guest bathroom. Plaster crown was carefully removed, relocated and supplemented by master craftsmen in order to maintain the integrity of rooms that were being reconfigured. The result? The ceiling will be constructed over the entire second floor (except the conference room). Within this framework, all of the floors, walls and ceilings will be continuously insulated creating a self-contained climate controlled area. The HVAC system will be a high efficiency mini-split system, some ducted and some wall mounted, but all will be located within the conditioned space. The “box within a box “ has two significant advantages. With this system, HVAC within the insulated space, the cost and maintenance of insulating the ducts is eliminated and adds efficiency to the system.
